Update for Windows 5
It is with great sadness that I report the transformation of Avantgo from
useful tool to history. Well that's currently true for Avantgo under a
Windows PDA using Windows CE5. The problem is font based and means that
pages display with ridiculously large fonts making it totally unreadable and
unusable. Avantgo have had over 6 months to fix the problem but ...
they've obviously had other priorities.
Summary
As currently setup I don't really know how I would survive the many boring
situations I find myself in without my Pocket PC. It is crammed full
of current information which gets updated automagically. And here is how.
(As per above this is now only useful for windows CE4 users and below i.e
CE 2003 second edition and below)
Avantgo for News
Basic Avantgo is a free service that allows you to subscribe to a number of
categories which may interest you. for example the New York Times Front
Page, The UK Guardian Newspaper Film Reviews, Wired Magazine. Every
time you connect your Pocket PC to your internet connected PC it automatically
downloads the latest articles in the categories subscribed and deletes the old
ones.
Here is a visual of how to get it all installed.
This tutorial assumes you are using a PC by the way ...
- Create an Avantgo account

- Navigate around and subscribe to some channels. Since there is a
lot of crap out there here is a print of some of my channels (you have
a 3MB limit so you cant select everything. For more than 3MB you would have
to take out a paid subscription).

The installation will ask the usual question about where to install the
software. For best performance install to RAM memory, but if RAM is short
install to Storage Card (as I do for all my programs in fact)
- On the settings page via your Pocket PC make sure you have
configured up the AvantGo host correctly

- At last time to give it a whirl

- Now let's try it out. I will navigate to the BBC Entertainment
section

And that's the end of this segment today. An update to
performing periodic updates using RSS feeds is in the works, for now use
Avantgo.
